Ísland
Shortly after finishing art school, I set out on a heritage trip to learn about the side of my family I never got to know. My biological father had recently passed away, and a DNA test helped fill in some of the blanks about where his side came from. Iceland was one of those places, so it became one of my stops. I based myself in Reykjavík, then rented a truck and drove just about anywhere the roads would take me. The album moves from the Viking ship sculpture on the shoreline and the church tower downtown to a brutalist hotel far out on the other side of the island, with lakes, waterfalls, sheer cliffs, mountains, and meadows fed by a glacier you can see in the distance along the way. With only an hour or two of darkness each night, the days felt endless, and knowing some part of my story runs through this place made every mile of it mean a little more. I wasn't anticipating that, but boy was I thankful.
